Support our programme

We have a number of opportunities for volunteers looking to support the Travel Actively programme:

Walk leader training

We are seeking people to train as volunteer walk leaders to lead organised group walks in Barrow-in-Furness and Carlisle.  Our aim is to encourage more people to walk with a purpose such as walking to the shops, to work or to an appointment.  Could you lead a 'walk to work' group for your organisation or perhaps you are a social prescriber looking to encourage others to become more physically active through walking for everyday journeys?  Full training and support is provided via the Ramblers Wellbeing Walks pathway.

Cycle leader training

A chance to become trained as a cycle leader to lead groups of riders. This free Group Leader Cycling UK Training provides opportunity for volunteers who want to confidently and safely lead cycle rides. You could set up your own groups and lead them from a health centre to a leisure centre where there are facilities to get cleaned up. Or lead a ride round the best local shops ending at a train station for onward travel. This allows the programme of cycle confidence and guided ride opportunities to be expanded further and beyond the end of the pilot.

Bike mechanic

An opportunity to be trained as a bike mechanic, from improving your at-home skills to becoming qualified. We can help you develop your skills and experience to fix common bike problems so the next time you are out and about you can fix that puncture and carry on! Or work towards certification to enable you to help others learn how to fix and maintain their bikes.

Event facilitator and support

An opportunity to assist the Travel Actively team in arranging and running events. This could include administrative tasks such as managing attendee lists, setting up stalls and helping activities run smoothly. This opportunity can help you develop your skills and experience to support you in the future when looking for other volunteer roles or paid positions.

And you'll get to meet our friendly Travel Actively team too!
