Wheels Up! Barrow Community Embraces eBike Revolution
Spring has officially arrived - and in Barrow, it rolled in on two wheels!
On Friday 30 May there was a burst of energy in the town as Travel Actively officially launched its inaugural Wheels for Hire scheme - an eBike rental initiative aimed at increasing accessibility to active travel. Nineteen participants received state-of-the-art eBikes for a six-month trial at just £10 per month, marking a significant step forward in promoting sustainable transport in the area.
Along with bike supplier Hurrecane, the scheme was officially unveiled at Park Vale where recipients had the opportunity to test ride their eBike for the first time. The atmosphere was electric, with smiles, laughter, and even a few tears as individuals from across the community experienced the freedom and excitement of cycling - many for the first time in years.

The initiative is part of Travel Actively, a pilot programme designed to promote walking, wheeling and cycling for short, everyday journeys in Barrow and Carlisle. Recognising that not everyone finds it easy to adopt traditional modes of active travel, the programme is focused on inclusivity. EBikes, with their battery-powered assistance, offer a vital alternative for people living with long-term health conditions, older adults who need a little extra support, or those unable to afford the upfront cost of a bicycle.
For many, the trial scheme will provide more than just a way to get around. It represents a chance to regain confidence, improve well-being, and reconnect with their community.
Finally, a big thank you to the people who engage with the Travel Actively projects. Be it litter picking, walking, fixing bikes, renting an eBike or bringing youngsters to cycle confidence sessions, you really are what makes the programme so worthwhile. The Wheels for Hire event was the epitome of community spirit and collaboration, watch this space for more magic!
Residents in Carlisle who successfully applied to Wheels for Hire will receive their e-bikes on Friday 13 June.
