Summer Strolls a Success in Carlisle

22 August 2025

Carlisle residents have been stepping out in style this summer thanks to the Summer Strolls walking series, part of the Travel Actively programme.

From June to August, seven friendly walks took place across the city, with around 30 people enjoying fresh air, gentle exercise, and plenty of conversation. Each walk lasted up to an hour, giving participants the chance to admire summer flowers, enjoy the sunshine, and round things off with well-earned tea, cake, and refreshments in local cafés.

The Summer Strolls aren’t just about enjoying the outdoors - they’re designed to help people build confidence in walking for everyday journeys. By taking part in relaxed, sociable walks, participants gain the motivation and reassurance to make walking a regular part of their daily lives.

Feedback from walkers has been overwhelmingly positive. One participant said the strolls were “great for mental wellbeing, seeing other people and getting out,” while another praised the walks for “giving her a reason to get out and start a habit.” A third commented, “It’s like getting 5,000 steps in without even noticing, as you’re so busy chatting!”

The good news is the walks are set to continue. The next series begins on Thursday 4 September at 10.30am, starting from Smillie’s Café, near the market hall bus stop. Walks will then take place every two weeks from various Carlisle locations.

The walks are free, open to all, and even welcome well-behaved dogs. So, lace up your shoes, bring a friend, and join the next stroll to help make walking part of your everyday journeys.
