May is National Walking Month
May is National Walking Month – a time to celebrate the simplest, most accessible form of active travel: walking.
Whether it's the school run, the daily commute, or a quick trip to the shops, walking offers a low-cost, zero-emission way to integrate movement into our everyday routines. It improves physical and mental wellbeing, reduces traffic congestion, and contributes to cleaner air in our communities.
At a time when many are rethinking how they travel, walking presents a powerful opportunity. Choosing to walk, even part of the way, can make a big difference — both personally and collectively. Swapping short car journeys for walking helps to reduce carbon emissions and eases pressure on local roads and public transport systems.
Walking is also a vital component of inclusive, sustainable transport networks. It requires no equipment, no fare, and no fuel — just a safe, connected environment that makes walking an easy, attractive choice.
This National Walking Month, we’re encouraging individuals, schools, employers, and local organisations to support and promote walking as a first choice for short, everyday journeys. Let’s put our best foot forward — for our health, our communities, and our planet.
