Step Into the Feet First 5 Day Challenge!
Supporting healthier, happier, and more active school journeys across Cumbria!
The Feet First 5‑Day Active Travel Challenge returns this spring from Monday 23 March to Friday 27 March 2026, and schools across the county are gearing up for a fun, rewarding, and impactful week that encourages families to choose active ways of travelling to school.
Whether it’s walking, wheeling, cycling, scooting - or even parking a little further away and striding the final stretch - every active journey counts. The challenge is designed to inspire long‑lasting healthy habits while improving safety and reducing congestion around school gates.
Why take part?
The Feet First Challenge brings a whole host of benefits for pupils, families, schools, and the wider community:
- Health & wellbeing boost. Active travel helps children and families build regular movement into their daily routine, supporting physical and mental wellbeing.
- Better for our environment. Fewer cars on the school run means better air quality and a smaller collective carbon footprint - an impact every school community can be proud of.
- Safer, less congested school gates. Reducing traffic at drop‑off and pick‑up times helps make the school environment safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
- It’s fun!. Children love the challenge element - earning stickers, collecting prizes, and encouraging each other to get active. Every child who collects at least one sticker on their journey card earns a prize.
