Introducing our brand new website

3 … 2 … 1 …. Blast off! The launch of Travel Actively’s brand new website was a roaring success with the team taking over Barrow Town Centre last Wednesday for an action packed day to celebrate!
Not one to miss an opportunity to promote active travel, the team pulled out all the stops providing travel related activities from bike confidence sessions to guided walks. Active travel is the act of walking, wheeling or cycling for short purposeful journeys such as walking to the shops or riding a bike to school. With over 200 engagements with the public on the day it was great to hear that the residents of Barrow are already incorporating these activities into their everyday life, improving their health and saving them money in the process.
Children from 4 local schools brought a sparkle to the day with their love of cycling evident throughout the bike confidence sessions with Helen from Stage 1 cycles. It is at this young age that a love of activity is embedded and the chance to cycle an invaluable opportunity to experience independence. Over 50 children participated, the huge smiles on their faces testament to the fun that was had.
Meanwhile the team welcomed visitors from council officials. With Active Travel high on their agenda they were encouraged to see the great work being done in the local area on bike provision, which was displayed marvellously by Travel Actively partners Barrow on Bikes. Throughout the day they provided bike repairs completely free of charge, assisted with demonstrating all types of bikes and led a guided ride. This work, led by a group of dedicated volunteers, is a shiny jewel in the Travel Actively crown and an example of a true community project.
If you could make a small change to your routine to travel more actively, what would you do? This is the question posed to 109 of Barrow’s citizens throughout the day, who then added their pledge to an inspiring collection throughout the day. The people of Barrow never fail to impress but this activity was above and beyond expectation, the pledges were considered, thoughtful and achievable. The Travel Actively team have every confidence in the pledges being adopted going forward and, as always, are here to help where they can. As a thank you for making a pledge each participant has been entered into a prize draw to win one of three £50 Halford’s vouchers, the results of which will be answered on Wednesday 9th April so be sure to check back here for results.
All of this fun is possible due to the hard work and investment of both the Travel Actively and Westmorland & Furness council teams to develop this website, a one stop hub for all of your active travel needs. We encourage you to explore the page taking in the inspirational stories of people already benefitting from the project, the opportunities for you to get involved, a journey planner to map out your routes and so much more.
Thank you to all that attended on the launch day, those who continue to engage with our teams and the website. We can’t wait to see how it evolves as we go along.
